What is Rheumatology?

Rheumatology is a subspecialty of internal medicine that focuses on rheumatic diseases. Rheumatologists diagnose and treat pain and disorders of the joints, muscles, bones, tendons, and other connective tissues. They also focus on autoimmune diseases related to the connective tissues.

When should you consider the consultation of a rheumatologist?

Rheumatologists are also known as arthritis doctors. If you are experiencing joint pain, swelling, or stiffness, it may be a good time to see a rheumatologist. Rheumatologists treat many rare and mystery diseases. Rheumatologists often act as detectives and help piece together a complex puzzle of symptoms and lab tests.

Here are other reasons to see a rheumatologist:

  • When you have certain abnormal blood tests such as anti nuclear antibodies(ANA), rheumatoid factor (RF), or elevated inflammatory markers such as erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) or c-reactive protein (CRP)
  • When you have trouble figuring out what’s wrong.
  • When you have joint pain, back pain, neck pain, or joint stiffness
  • When you feel overall fatigue and muscle aches
